PLAYER SHOUT-OUTS
Saturday Clubs United League (10 August)
Saturday in sunny Haggerston offered us a juicy game against Booters, a well-worthy opponent.
The team did incredibly well to maintain a 1-1 draw for 39.5 of the 40 minute match. Suzie coming off the line in goal to proactively challenge attackers one-on-one. Lisa stepping up to help defend at the last minute, without whom we wouldn’t have had enough players. May playing fiercely in attack for the first time in over a year (and unfortunately sacrificing an ankle). Scotty commuting all over the pitch, and putting in so many headers that the opponents started thinking it was a basketball game. Sophia throwing multiple great shots in attack, with one converting into our highly prized goal. Cheeky Booters managed a last minute curveball with a well-executed corner, resulting in a near 2-1 loss for GDFC on this occasion.
Booters selected Scotty as their POTM. Captain Suzanne’s POTM went to May, for making every single minute on the pitch count before succumbing to injury.
A great result as FC Goaldiggers moved up the Clubs United table with a resounding 4-1 victory over Babe City. Stunning performances all round from Paula in goal making some of her trademark Hollywood saves, Amy’s dazzling footwork in the midfield engine room and Brooke constantly battering at the opposition defence. But it was the two “Julias” (poetic licence here) who really shone. Julia was a rock in defence, tackling like a demon and barely letting the Babes get a sniff of goal. Meanwhile Giulia was the spearhead of the FCGD attack, bagging a brace on her Clubs United debut. But for the heroics of Babe City’s custodian Giulia might have bagged a hat trick. The Goals’ other goals came from Amy and Brooke with Julia a whisker away from contributing one of her own to the tally. It was a tough choice but captain Paula player of the match went to Giulia whilst Babe City selected Brooke as their POTM.
Sunday Goal Posts League (12 August)
The scorching heat of August did not deter the fierce competition between Goals Aloud and Goal Diggers in their 5-a-side football match. From the get-go, Goal Diggers took an early lead, scoring two quick goals and putting Goals Aloud on the back foot.
But Goals Aloud were not ready to give up just yet. In the second half, they fought back with determination, narrowing the gap with some impressive plays and goals of their own.
However, it was Goal Diggers who ultimately emerged victorious with a final score of 3-2. Two goals from Isobel and a goal from Izzy sealed the win for their team. Izzy's skillful footwork and agility left opponents spinning, while Isobel's and Antoinette’s multiple shots on target proved to be crucial in securing the win.
Defensively, Aly, Maike and Ellie were a force to be reckoned with, acting as an impenetrable wall and thwarting any attempts from Goals Aloud to equalize.
In the end, Aly was awarded the player of the match for their outstanding performance on the field. Despite the scorching heat, both teams displayed exceptional skill and sportsmanship, making it a thrilling and competitive match to remember.
