GDFC IN 2024

Thank you for 2023!

A huge ‘thank you’ to our volunteer committee members for all the work they did behind the scenes at GDFC last year. The club had an incredible year in 2023, the quality of training, the football, the socials and the support for our members was really strong and that is thanks to them!

In 2023 we also formalised our ‘volunteer group’ - those that write this very newsletter, help us run leagues, organise our equipment and run our social media. These members help lighten the committee load and also really embody the GDFC ethos that we're a club run by the members. Thank you!

GDFC in 2024

Founder Fleur has set our main aim for 2024 to 'make a big club feel small'. GDFC is a big club now, but we always want our members, new and old, to feel included and significant, from the pitch to the pub.

All our committee have had a think about how they can help 'make a big club feel small' and we'll be sharing notes from each of our meetings with our actions for the next 3 months. This is to keep us accountable and to improve committee visibility.

See you on the pitch!

PLAYER SHOUT-OUTS

NYE KICKAROUND

Ethos of the week Mylinh PLUS lots of super kickaround players of the week! What a gorge end to 2023! Thanks to everyone for bringing such beaut vibes xxx

SATURDAY 11s

Fan’s player was Ruby for their fantastic debut. Never stopped running.

Coach’s player was Paula for putting her body on the line and making lots of vital saves.

Captain’s player was Mylinh - who also had a great debut. Never looked out of place and was always so calm on the ball.

Gorgey game to come back to, although narrowly defeated (1-0), the goal diggers never stopped working for each other and being positive through out.

SUPER LIGA 7s

A solid pair of performances from the Advanced team in the Super Liga 7s got the New Year off to an unbeaten start with a win & a draw from this afternoon’s games. It was a war of attrition against a feisty Tribal in the opening game but we had the bulk of the game’s most clear cut opportunities with the opposition keeper making some quality saves. Tribal came more into the game as the match progressed but with the Diggers’ defence dominant there were few meaningful shots to trouble our goal as the match finished 0-0. After a few early scars in the second game against PCW, Goals broke the deadlock with a sublime solo goal from Kate dancing through the defence before tucking the ball away. A second came from a corner, Kate pouncing to finish after Emma’s thunderous volley had crashed against the cross & rebounded back into play. The ever-industrious Emma got a thoroughly deserved third as she battled in the box to stab a loose ball home. With so many players going above and beyond in effort it was an almost-impossible task to select the player of the day. Captain Paula’s choice was Niamh, the beating heart of the team in the CDM role initiating attacks, helping out defence and totally “here, there and every  where”!!

SUNDAY 8s

Sunday 8s in Haggerston was a glorious day of football. Despite losing the first match 0-1 to Sisterhood FC we managed to come away with a 1-1 draw in the second match to top of the league team, Hackney Wick FC. Big thanks to captain Sophia and League Manager extraordinaire Adday as well as our wonderful fans. Captain’s POTM went to Beth and the fans’ POTM went to Ellie for incredible defending, perseverance and dribbling up the line. Shout out to Mylinh for bravely stepping up and delivering a stunning penalty goal.

WEDNESDAY TRAINING

What a delight the first training back was! Players of the week were Gaby, Katie, Lily & Dr Kim!
